Artist Statement

I am on a lifelong journey of self discovery and self healing.  Left in the dark, my hurts and wounds from the past form into masks, armor, and fears. I believe we are all in need of healing: a journey of forgiveness, acceptance, faith, and love. My art conveys the truth that as we experience the redemption and restoration of our brokenness, we can express that light into a hurting world.

I create using acrylic paints and mediums, as well as other media such as charcoal, pigment sticks, and collage.  Multiple layers are applied with palette knives, and both visual and tactile texture give each piece added interest and depth. Although most of the layers will never be seen, each layer directs the next and influences the whole. Scraping into the paint and excavating parts of the previous layers brings the past into the present with beauty and kinship.

Like the revealing of under layers, my past must be brought out of the dark and into the light. I am on a circular path to wholeness: loving the imperfections and finding beauty in the imperfect. My art manifests truths of the heart: the desire to be whole, to be courageous, to love ourselves and others, and to have a living hope that leads to unstoppable joy.

MARKS and meaning

You will find a lot of marks on my works.  I use a lot of circles, expressing both wholeness and completeness, and also importance.  Dots are another favorite, and not only are they circles, but they hold a playfulness and innocence that I love. Crosses are a mark expressing my faith and the freedom found there. There are marks that look like handwriting, but they do not form actual words.  This is called Asemic Writing, and it is there to convey writing without imposing my words on the viewer.  I want the viewer to participate in the meaning and to let the art express the words they need to see.  You will see others, but these are some of my more common marks.
